We’re currently implementing The Literacy Initiative, which commenced with a literacy awareness campaign using community theatre. The northeast has the lowest literacy rates in Nigeria, and GBVS believes this needs to change. Between December 2017 and February 2018, we staged eight adaptations of Gibran’s The Prophet across locations in Gombe, giving emphasis to Almajiri school precincts.

We have started the phase where we teach reading and numeracy to 60 almajiri pupils in two schools in Gombe. Working with volunteer teachers, including students of English from Gombe State University, we are hoping that these almajiri pupils shall, in addition to their study of the Qur’an in Arabic, gain some capacity in secular and English language learning so that they shall have at least functional competence and fit into Nigeria’s English language formal environment.
